IOM Mongolia Advocated for the Voting Rights of the Mongolian Diaspora
Ulaanbaatar - IOM Mongolia has been advocating for the voting rights of the Mongolian diaspora in the 2024 Parliamentary election that took place on 28 June 2024. The advocacy campaign has underlined notable improvements in the election regulations.
The enhancement of the electoral regulatory systems to secure the voting rights of Mongolian diaspora is four-fold. First, the 2024 Parliamentary election is the first opportunity for Mongolian diasporas to exercise their voting rights on the parliamentary election excluding one exception in 2012. Diasporas could only participate in presidential elections until the 2024 Parliamentary election.
Second, online registration to participate in the election is enabled, and it has let the diasporas to economize their time and money. Additionally, diasporas were able to vote for Parliamentary elections during extended voting period for four days: from 20 June 2024 to 23 June 2024 at 07:00 - 22:00, local time. For previous elections, the voting duration for diasporas was two days.
Lastly, a dedicated technical working group has been established by the Mongolian General Election Committee to promote diaspora participation. IOM Mongolia collaborated with the committee to improve accessibility to information and increase diaspora engagement in the election.
In the 2024 Parliamentary election, 9,760 out of the registered 13,095 Mongolian citizens abroad casted their ballot at the 47 diplomatic missions of Mongolia in 34 countries. The number of diasporas participated in the 2024 Parliamentary election accounts for 74.53 percent of the total number of registered Mongolian diasporas.
